2021 Lookback

Thoughts and favorite stories from an unusual year.

We all hoped that 2021 would be normal, after a rough 2020 that introduced us to terms like pandemic, quarantine, and PCR.

Unfortunately, that was not to pass. 2021 was still full of uncertainty and unusual events, including vaccines and new variants that have taught me the virus is here to stay.

Rather than get rid of it, which may never happen, I believe we must now learn to live with it. So get vaccinated and take some reasonable precautions, but otherwise live your life without too much fear.

We recently took a family trip to Egypt for 2 weeks. I had always wanted to see the pyramids and am completely fascinated by Pharaonic culture and achievements.

So we went, and it was fantastic. Lots of paperwork and PCR testing, but no Covid (adults are vaccinated but kids aren’t as the appropriate vaccines are not available where we live).

Financially it was a great year for us. Our real estate holdings and index funds are up by significant amounts. Some other investments have not done as well but still produced solid returns.

I’m looking forward to what 2022 can bring, though I won’t be surprised if the stock and real estate markets are not as hot as they have been the past two years, especially with interest-rate hikes…
