As an American who has lived abroad most of my adult life in “remote” places like West Africa, I wish I were still there rather than back in the US. However, that was for work with a lot of perks (and Peace Corps Cameroon before that). I’m not a fan of life in the US, but that’s mostly for adventure. One thing I do note while researching places to retire is that trying to retire abroad with kids makes things much harder. International schools are expensive vs free schools back home. You could do local schools and have problems when moving back, or you could home school if it won’t destroy your family. 😁 Most people I see doing the expat retirement don’t have kids, at least not at home.
