The rent and cost of ownership are from an actual exercise of me looking for properties in Katy, TX on Zillow. Today housing prices have gone up faster than rent, so you can get the same house in the same area cheaper as a rental than to buy it in terms of monthly costs. If you put down less than 20%, you have to pay off additional costs (mortgage insurance) and of course a larger monthly payment, but I haven't done the math to see the total impact.
