I visited Bhutan a few years ago, and they are famous for measuring Gross National Happiness rather than GDP. However, I'm not sure this is the right path as their people are quite poor and business is highly regulated, meaning the people have few opportunities to improve their lives. Development brings schools, hospitals, jobs, etc. It's not all about flat screens and fancy cars!
