Jay, thanks for the discussion. I agree that public opinion of Bill Gates is different from that of the HVAC guy you mentioned, but public policy often lumps them together. Instead of HVAC, he could have just as easily built a couple small apartment complexes but now has to see his income potential fall off a cliff because of rent control, for example. It is easy to pass laws that we imagine only impact the Uber-wealthy who can handle it, but oftentimes the HVAC guy is the actual target. For example, we focus so much on income tax, but the Uber-wealthy don't have income, they have assets. So increasing the tax rate hurts doctors, lawyers, engineers, and other well paid professionals. I read lots of articles blaming "the rich" for a lot of things, but mostly I just see anger rather than logic.
